You can’t boil the ocean, but you can make many cups of tea. That’s a note to self that I read frequently in 2024. Instead of being overwhelmed by the myriad challenges of managing many responsibilities, I focused on 3 this year –
- Advocating dementia prevention
2024 began with a profound realization at the Alzheimer’s Disease International Conference in Krakow: Prevention isn’t just a strategy—it’s a mission.
Presenting Hope for Dementia’s virtual poster wasn’t about sharing data and gaining academic recognition. It was about demonstrating that dementia prevention requires holistic, collaborative approaches. I was advocating for a fundamental shift in how we approach cognitive health. This moment crystallized my year’s journey: transforming intentions into tangible community impact.
2. Moving from advocacy to action
One example: Hope for Dementia’s “Move for a Healthy Mind” Project
We didn’t just donate exercise equipment to seniors’ residences. We created a framework for active, engaged aging thus demonstrating our commitment to maintaining cognitive health. Forty seniors received exercise kits, sessions with a professional trainer and resource material to support a physical and cognitive health.
3. Promoting leadership excellence
Standing among remarkable leaders in the100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women Recognition program, I shared a core belief: “Leadership and mentorship have always gone hand in hand in my career. I strongly encourage everyone to empower others; to lead in building innovative community programs.”
My key learnings from 2024 that will continue to guide me in 2025:
- Intentions matter more than titles – being crystal clear about my ‘why’
- Community impact trumps individual achievement – I can only succeed if those who I serve succeed
- Every professional journey is about creating meaningful change – while I can’t boil the ocean, I can make many cups of tea.
I hope this post is helpful.
Happy new everything that’s good in 2025.
See the BIG picture. Focus on what’s important.
